The Innovation Paradox in Hospitality – by Tjalling van den Burger

Over the past 6 years, I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with the hospitality industry in the UAE (and beyond), engaging in countless insightful conversations with professionals at meetings and conferences. The hospitality industry, in my experience, stands out as one of the most vibrant and enjoyable sectors to be a part of. The people I’ve met are among the warmest and most welcoming individuals imaginable, showcasing a remarkable dedication to their craft. They hold a deep respect for tradition and established practices, which adds a unique charm to the industry.

During tech conferences, when hospitality leaders share their insights, it’s noticeable how certain trends capture the collective attention, from crypto and blockchain, followed by the web3/metaverse craze to the current AI wave. It’s admirable to see such a commitment to enhancing the industry. However, I believe that the foundation of it all still needs refinement, before jumping into the next big thing, not only to ensure sustained growth but also to enrich the guest experience, staying true to the hospitality industry’s core values of care and service.
